|
|
I went to Rye with Steven’s parents and their friend yesterday. It was so much fun looking around at the sand sculptures and followed by a little picnic at the bay. I was so impressed with the sand sculptures!! There were great!!

Our Sunday
|
|
Today is our “special day”, Steven and I decided to treat our tummies to 1 nice big meal. Thus, we decided to have lunch at Sofia’s Pizza House, the place which is strongly recommended by Mr. Looney (my ex-colleague).
There's a good reason why Sofia’s Pizza House had been one of the most popular restaurants in Camberwell. I believe that reason is because they serve the biggest serving of food anywhere in Camberwell… haha The serving sizes are massive, literally expect mountains of pasta;-p I ordered Spaghetti Sofia and Steven ordered Ravioli. The spaghetti Sofia tasted heavenly!! There were heaps of prawns, scallops, chicken fillets and bacon in the spaghetti!! I was really pleased. The Ravioli was nice...Hmm... Not great (I think I prefer Steven’s home-made spaghetti).
The total damage come to $22.20, which we think it’s a good price consider both of us were way too full to swallow any other food ) You simply must try Sofia’s Pizza House at least once. Go stuff yourself silly...
After this crazy big meal, we thought we should do something to burn off the fat. So, we decided to go for a 10km walk along the Yarra Main Trail. It was so much fun to walk along the river, with the view of early autumn, the animals at Collingwood Children’s Farm… Awww… what a good Sunday we had!

Eating out - Penang Coffee House
|
|
Steven and I were watching the footy last night and decided to have a bet on the outcome. The team I went for was Carlton and …HAHAHA. They won the Nab cup!!!!! So, Steven had to buy me a nice lunch today and we decided to have a big meal at Penang Coffee House down at Burwood Road.
I am a food snob when it comes to Malaysian food. This is just because I was born and raised in Malaysia where great foods are plentiful. We went to the Penang Coffee House last week and we ordered a Laksa Lemak and a Chef’s Chicken (lemon grass chicken, tasted like Satay chicken). The Laksa Lemak was OK but not great. However, the chef’s chicken was great!! Well, I forgot to bring my camera for the first time so we decided to give the restaurant the second try.
For the second visit, we ordered Loh Bak , Ha Mee (Hokkien Mee or prawn noodle soup) and the Chef’s Chicken again!! ;-p
“Ha Mee or Hokkien Mee is a popular noodle soup with spicy broth made from prawn shells and heads and served with hard-boiled eggs, shredded prawns, water convolvulus, pork, crispy fried shallots and a spoonful of chili paste.”
The Ha Mee of Penang Coffee House tasted alright. The broth was nice but not spicy enough thought, I was a bit disappointed where they replace the water convolvulus with spinach (may be it’s hard to get it at Melbourne). I know I shouldn’t compare it with Lam Ha Min back at Petaling Jaya, Malaysia or Penang Hokkien Mee so I gave 7 out of 10 to Penang Coffee House.
Well, the Loh Bak at Penang Coffee House tasted ok, it was too oily for Steven. Loh Bak is a meat roll wrapped in beancurd skin and deep fried to perfection. It didn’t taste the same as back in Malaysia, but it was passable for me. The only disappointment for me was the sauce, it wasn’t the chili sauce and a starchy sauce flavored with five-spice powder and eggs. Instead, it was a chili sauce mixed with sweet soya sauce and peanuts.
Well, the Chef’s Chicken was great again!! And I think we will be going back again!!

Marmite Chicken
|
|
I found this recipe online and so try to cook it for Steven as dinner. It was very nice and my picky hubby actually love it !! Here is the recipe, happy cooking !!
Ingredients
250 ml oil for deep frying
2 chicken thighs about 500g (cut into pieces)
Marinade
1 tsp light soya sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 Tbsp cornflour
Sauce
2 Tbsp Marmite yeast extract/ vegemite ( I use only 1 Tbsp of Vegemite)
2 Tbsp honey
1 Tbsp light soya Sauce
dash of black pepper and chicken stock granules
100 ml water
2 pips garlic, chopped
Method
Mix chicken with marinade and marinade for 1 hour. Deep fry in hot oil for 2 minutes or until cooked. Dish and drain. (I didn’t use oil to fry the chicken. In fact I fry the chicken in a non-stick pan)
Dissolve marmite and honey in water
Leave 1 Tbsp oil in wok, saute garlic, pour in sauce and cook at medium heat until thick. Put in fried chicken and mix well. Dish up and serve.

Chinese New Year In Melbourne
|
|
Lately, I noticed I’m increasingly craving for Malaysian food and delicacies. I suppose Chinese New Year is drawing near. It's the same thing with international phone calls. I tend to call my family more often lately. I am really trying not to do that this time as I don't want to incur any more extra expenses. After all, I'll be able to talk to them in person soon. If I tell myself that often enough, I just might be successful this time.
From memory, when I first arrived at Melbourne I was very excited to be on the "greener pasture". Everything looked, smelled and tasted new and different. I grazed on the new grass like a newborn calf, just hungry and thirsty for the new life. Coming from a relatively small city, I was overwhelmed and impressed by the sights and sounds of Melbourne. There was just so much to take in all at once. I didn't have time to miss home at all. I was too busy exploring and experiencing the Australian life. That's not to say that I didn't miss my family at all. I was just totally immersed in the newness of everything that I didn't have room to be sad and mope around. I made a conscious decision to leave home so I dealt with the repercussions my own way.
However, my first Chinese New Year away from home…… I found myself dealing with bouts of homesickness. I missed the festive feeling back home, I missed the cookies and Chinese foods back home and I definitely MISSED the red money packets back home!!
Steven was kind enough to company me down to China Town Melbourne for the CNY celebration. Celebration in Melbourne was a “different” experience. Lots of westerners around, lots of food stalls, lots of fire crackers, lion dance, lots of Chinese deco items ….while hanging around, I see familiar faces in search for the foods that taste like they're back in their mother's kitchen. They are the faces of people determined and eager to take home a piece of that old life. The sight, taste and smell of our local cuisine are what bind us to our homeland and families…
Well, it definitely an eye-opener to experience a CNY celebration in a foreign land.
Missed the celebration back home, but being here has been absolutely fabulous as well!! HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR to everyone!!

Docklands Trip
|
|
2 weeks has passed and I haven't written anything about my trip to Docklands.
We decided to allocate the Sunday morning off to watch the African Music Road show and the Dragon Boat Competition at the Docklands. I suppose there is no better way to spend a lazy Sunday morning.
The African Music Road Show was sooo good! The performers were Fabulous! It was so much fun to watch the kids have fun playing the musical instruments while having our lunch Red Roaster. Yummy!! Yummy!!
The dragon boat competition was truly amazing. I never expected that there would be heaps of westerners taking part in this competition.
Anyway, check out the photos for a "feel" of Eastern arts incorporated into a Western culture country such as Australia.
